- The GMD-1 was built by General Motors Diesel (GMD), the Canadian arm of EMD.
- The 1000-series GMD-1s (which includes #1003) were delivered to CN between 1958 and 1960.
- These locomotives featured an A-1-A truck arrangement (six axles, but only four powered) to distribute their weight for use on light rail branches in the Prairie regions.
- They were primarily intended for freight service, geared for a top speed of 65 MPH, and did not have a steam generator installed, though the cab was equipped with controls to operate a separate steam generator car.
- The Rapido model is highly detailed, featuring specific details accurate to the prototype, such as detailed piping, separate grab irons, and accurate sounds.
